OUT OF THE COLD

Mixed Media Sculpture and Acrylic Painting

This piece explores the experience of pushing through isolation and discomfort. Inspired by climbing experiences in Nepal, the piece incorporates symbolic objects that reflect physical endurance and emotional resilience.

Symbolism:

  • Climber in the mountains — perseverance, resilience, and pushing beyond limits

  • Prayer flags (Kathmandu, Nepal) — hope, healing, and spiritual endurance

  • White khata scarf (Tengboche Monastery Puja ceremony) — protection, blessing, and safe passage

  • Rope — support, survival, connection, and the path upward

  • Icicles — isolation, discomfort, and emotional coldness

  • Glittering snow surface — beauty and hardship; tension between dark and light

  • White flowers — growth, healing, peace, and renewal

  • Mirrors — self-reflection and seeing yourself move forward

  • Lights and sunrise — hope, clarity, and emerging from darkness

Artist Description:

This mixed media piece combines paint and sculpture to explore the idea of breaking out—pushing through discomfort and the dark. Built inside a box that fits into a cubby space, the structure creates a sense of confinement. From a snow-like surface, a figure is climbing through, with only the head and hands visible. Mirrors are incorporated into the piece, bringing in an element of self-reflection and placing the viewer within that moment of struggle. This piece connects to both the physical and emotional experience in progress, where the cold surface suggests isolation and resistance, while the act of climbing represents the push toward higher ground. Inspired by climbing in Nepal, the piece reflects the tension between being stuck and still pushing upward to get past limits.
